Welcome to the freakshow
I suppose everyone is familiar with the CONCORD-and-affiliates' propaganda about capsuleers. They say we're immortals, demigods whose every action make the cluster quakes. I have somewhere a Tribal Sponsorship, a document the Republic gave to me the first day of my capsuleer career. The thing basically says "O Capsuleer, we're powerless and humbled by your might, please be kind with us. We like kind."
Obvious bullshit, right ? But you know this, it's "Scamming 101" : the more it's obvious, the better it works.
Our might boils down to : we fly spaceships. Sure, we're good at it. Even a rookie like myself, a terrible pilot by capsuleers' standards, can fly a frigate more efficiently than a whole non-ehanced crew would. Oh, and when a capsuleer's ship get blapped, the cost in human lives is far, far less important than with a classical vessel.
And the so-called immortality ? A sarabande of clones. Just a fucking technology, and thus, a fleeting thing. We're not immortals : we're momentarily impervious to death. Our moment may last decades, it may last centuries -but it'll be just that : a moment, another beat of some godly heart. Sooner or later, mankind will create a new, shinier tool to fulfill its needs. Humanity will unplug the cloning facilities. And the whole capsuleer show will end : lights off on the stage, on on the public, applaud if you were amused, get out, have a drink.
Incidentally : the day the cloning facilities are turned off, watching the previously egomaniacs, sure-of-their-might capsuleers, all curled up in various corners of the cluster, powerless and probably crying loudly -O, the hilarious, joyful spectacle it will provide. Come to think of it, I'll probably be one of them.
So, yeah, capsuleers are nothing but powerful tools. Even the lawless, ruthless pirates roaming lowsec : New Eden resources are so crazily plentiful the destruction they joyfully provide keeps the economy floating (1). The proud capsuleer, king of his nullsec peeble provides highsec with rare resources. Etc, etc.
End of rant. The other day, there was a discussion on those subjects in the Summit. To prove her point (which was : capsuleers are demigods and mere humans are puny, stinky, etc) some batshit crazy sociopath opened the airlocks of her ship, sending in the freezing void the seventy members of her crew.
You're in space now. Enjoy your stay, and welcome to the freakshow.
(1)An economy that needs its daily share of deaths & wrecks is obviously so fucked-up it should be put out of its misery -but that's an all different subject.
